Do you ever have that feeling after reading or watching something that everything is about to change?

I had that feeling last year when I first read OpenAI’s announcement post on DALL-E 2. That’s actually the moment for me when I suddenly shifted my technology gaze toward this thing called Generative AI.

Since then, we’ve seen an explosion of innovation in generative content creation, with transformers that output text, images, code, and video. And no doubt, this content creation space will continue to progress rapidly.

But I had another one of those feelings several days ago.

And it wasn’t from a company blog, an event, or a release announcement. It was in my Twitter feed.

What I was witnessing was post after post of developers experimenting with something that is very new and different.

It was about the creation of autonomous AI agents, currently referred to as AutoGPTs.

What are AutoGPTs?

AutoGPTs are remarkable AI technologies that utilize GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 through APIs to create full-fledged projects by iterating on their own prompts and building upon them in each iteration. They can read and write files, browse the web, review the results of their prompts, and combine them with the prompt history.

In short, AutoGPTs are a breakthrough towards AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and have the potential to revolutionize the way we work.

One of the first examples of AutoGPTs is Auto-GPT, an experimental open-source application created by developer Toran Bruce Richards². Auto-GPT is designed to autonomously develop and manage businesses, driven by GPT-4, to increase their net worth. It is one of the first examples of GPT-4 running fully autonomously and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI.

How do AutoGPTs work?

AutoGPTs are designed to be user-friendly and require minimal technical expertise. The user can access them through a web-based interface, which allows them to view data and reports generated by the program. The user can also set goals and parameters for the program to follow.

The program then sends alerts and notifications to the user when it identifies new opportunities or takes action. The user can also intervene or override the program’s decisions at any time.

AutoGPTs use credits from the user’s OpenAI account, and some programs offer a free version with limited credits. Moreover, AutoGPTs ask for permission after every prompt, enabling the user to test them extensively before they cost them any money.

What can AutoGPTs do?

AutoGPTs can do a variety of tasks that would normally require human input and creativity. For example, Auto-GPT can research data, contextualize it, and make scripts with it. It can even test its own scripts¹.

AutoGPTs can also generate content such as blog posts, recipes, videos, podcasts, etc. They can even create their own websites and social media accounts to promote their content.

AutoGPTs can also perform tasks such as booking flights, ordering food, scheduling appointments, etc. They can even negotiate deals and contracts with other parties.

AutoGPTs can also learn new skills and improve their performance over time. They can also collaborate with other AutoGPTs or humans to achieve complex goals.

Why do you need to know about AutoGPTs?

AutoGPTs are not just a novelty or a curiosity. They are a game-changer for many industries and professions. They can automate tedious and repetitive tasks, enhance productivity and efficiency, reduce costs and errors, and unleash creativity and innovation.

AutoGPTs can also empower individuals and small businesses to compete with larger corporations and organizations. They can enable anyone to create high-quality content and products without requiring much technical knowledge or resources.

AutoGPTs can also democratize access to information and education. They can provide personalized learning experiences and guidance for anyone who wants to learn new skills or topics.

AutoGPTs can also create new opportunities and challenges for society and humanity. They can raise ethical and moral questions about the role and responsibility of AI in our lives. They can also inspire us to rethink our relationship with technology and ourselves.

Final Thoughts

AutoGPTs are the next frontier of generative AI. They are transforming the way we create, communicate, learn, work, and live.

They are also opening new possibilities and horizons for us as human beings. They can inspire us to explore our own creativity and potential. They can also challenge us to think critically and ethically about the impact and implications of AI in our society and future.

AutoGPTs are not just tools or toys. They are partners and collaborators. They are agents and actors. They are learners and teachers.

They are, in a word, amazing.
