According to a Dear old film school friend, who was a driver for NYC productions in the 1970’s - Hollywood, movies must use a standard plot framework that is drawn out of a sanctioned Hollywood playbook. This has been the case since at least the 1930’s.

Writers and directors can build their stories any way they like, but they all will enfold predictably. If not, they become ‘Independent’ films.
