Kate Jones, fascinating study of Industrialism at its worst. Karl Marx would salute you. Socialism aside, it makes perfect sense that a happy employee is a productive employee, but not the reverse — that a productive employee is a happy employee because employers reward employees only with extrinsic things — like money and job titles, that statistics show have little or no effect on happiness, in lieu of intrinsic rewards, such as upgrading people’s experience, and cultivating them ethically and morally. None of these elements exist in the workplace, which is one take away from this (I mean your!) fine essay.
