You are right, it shouldn’t be something that has to be shared, but it is. It is because we aren’t all treated so respectfully in similar situations.
Eleven years ago, when my son was two and I happened to be (very) pregnant, he had a meltdown while I was attempting to check out at the grocery store. I was trying my best to hold on to him as he thrashed around, kicking and hitting me (doing my best to keep him away from my stomach) while simultaneously trying to pay and get the hell out of there.
In the midst of it all he yanked my shirt, and bra down, exposing me to everyone that just stood there berating me with their death stares.
Not ONE person offered to help me. Not ONE person had a sympathetic gaze. It was one of the most miserable and embarrassing experiences I’ve ever had in public.
The world definitely needs more of the amazing people you encountered at Trader Joe’s!
