Your friends are still posting, but you don´t see it anymore!
2010
In 2010, I started studying at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany. It was the best time of my life and I really had a blast learning so much stuff, while connecting with so many different people. My Facebook friends list grew and became much bigger, but along the road something quite interesting happened:
While the number of friends grew, I saw less relevant posts in my News Feed! Relevant people and updates got replaced by auto-playing cat videos. Digging deeper I realized, that although my relevant friends are still posting, most posts never made it into my News Feed!
Did you know?
On average, a post is only seen by 16% of friends due to the temporal nature of the News Feed and Facebooks’s EdgeRank.
The FeedVis Project
The FeedVis project shows users on the left all posts by friends. On the right are the posts that actually appear on the News Feed. Users were astonished by how long the left column was and how many things are hidden from Facebook. For most subjects, this was the first time they were aware of the existence of an algorithm.
Did you know?
37.5% of participants were aware, and 62.5% were not aware or uncertain. Often, people became very upset when posts from family members and loved ones were hidden.
2012
In 2012, I opened an Twitter and Instagram account and started posting, but as soon as I followed more than a dozen people on Twitter, my timeline turned into a never-ending stream. The more I followed, the worse it got. It still is really hard to catch up and “Information Overload” gets a new definition with Twitter.
Instagram is awesome and has so much potential, but the company hasn’t delivered any meaningful product improvement over the last two years. A tiny percentage of my Facebook friends are using the service and I clearly want to see more than just pictures.
Did you know?
Since last year Twitter is algorithmically curating the timeline of its users, although many people are against it.
2014
Often times, technology companies create simple solutions to complex problems. Sometimes those simple solutions become so successful, that they create a set of new problems, which the world hasn´t seen before.
On the one side Facebook, Twitter and Instagram made it easier to connect and consume information. On the other side, the information overload increased and made it harder to keep up with close friends or family members.
In 2014, we started creating a very elegant and simple solution, so you never have to miss a post from your family members and loved ones again.
