Have you ever imagined a world defined by on-chain data and transactions? This is an extension to another virtual reality connected with our physical world that we see, hear, touch, and feel. MIXtown defines ‘On-chain Storytelling’ as the next stage of creativity.

1. Gradually Blurring Boundaries with the Virtual World

World’s Stats for ‘Detroit: Become Human’, where numerous branching points occur based on the player’s choices.

1) We are already familiar with the genre of ‘real-time interactive storytelling’ in our lives. You can purchase ‘Detroit: Become Human’ on Steam right now and play it, or enjoy Netflix’s ‘Interactive TV Shows.’ Storyverse can become an entertaining playground for PFP NFTs like CryptoPunks and BAYC. (In MIXtown, we have Eva #3724 from the CryptoPunks world!)

2) This type of storytelling goes beyond pre-rendered video formats and, through game engines like Unreal or Unity, dynamically renders the story in real-time based on the choices and actions of the user. Imagine experiencing it through a VR headset. How would that feel? What new sensations will Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro provide us?

3) The combination of these technologies completely erases the boundaries of the real world, making us believe in the real-time generated virtual world before our eyes. While I mentioned VR technology initially, in fact, this is still applicable when extended to AR, MR, XR (Can you explain each of these distinctions?).

3D Spatial Video overlaid on real-world space redefines the relationship between time and space.

4) High-performance graphics cards are no longer used solely for cryptocurrency mining. The demand for high-quality rendering and Gen AI content alone has already exceeded the market supply. Have you experienced Nvidia’s latest graphics card with DLSS3 technology? It’s an incredible innovation.

5) Even if you don’t have high-performance hardware, improved network infrastructure invites us to experience advanced virtual worlds in any hardware environment through cloud rendering technology. This experience is now unfolding not only on heavy and noisy desktops but also on smartphones in the palm of your hand. Thus, the “real-time nature of virtual worlds” is approaching perfect synchronization with the real world.

6) In the past, we didn’t argue when we saw virtual worlds filled with identical-looking NPC (Non-Player Character) clones with only different colors. As “LLM-based AI agent technology” advances, every NPC in the virtual world will now exist as an entity with its own persona. Of course, this works equally well on the 8-bit graphic level we’ve experienced over the past few decades.

The large-scale multiplayer environment of Otherside mimics the real world in a new way.

7) Otherside by Yuga Labs, one of the most highly anticipated projects in the Web3 space, is in the process of creating a virtual world experience where thousands of users swiftly navigate through different worlds. This resembles our real-life experiences more closely compared to traditional MMORPG games fragmented across multiple servers. While many are excited about their open IP policy, another innovation in Otherside lies in its large-scale multiplayer environment.

8) Surprisingly, CCP Games already implemented a single-server-based large-scale multiplayer environment in their 2003 game, Eve Online, and their philosophy continues to garner significant support. With the integration of AI agents, how much further will the virtual world of Eve Online evolve over the next 20 years? CCP Games has just taken its first steps into Web3.

The history of Eve Online is filled with astonishing events.

2. Technology for Building New Virtual Worlds — Blockchain

9) Many people expect that today’s virtual worlds will someday integrate with blockchain, enabling new societies, politics, economics, cultures, and arts to thrive within them. However, others dismiss this notion, labeling what is commonly known as the ‘Metaverse’ as a fantasy and complaining that ‘blockchain’ is a pitiful enabler.

10) Whether it’s a thought and statement one had at some point or not depends on the individual, but I can confidently say that it’s not the case now. The scalability issues that blockchain faced in the past are gradually being addressed through Layer 2 technologies. Launching new projects on top of Base and Zora is a very wise choice. Moreover, Starknet mentions Layer 3, 4… through Fractal Scaling.

The scalability of blockchain has now reached a point where it can accommodate our imagination.

11) The ‘Fully on-chain game (FOG),’ where all game logic operates on-chain, is evolving into an ‘Autonomous World (AW)’ based on ‘On-chain game engines’ in ecosystems like the MUD on EVM or DOJO on Starknet. While it may not be the case right now, high-quality graphics elements will soon be added to this environment.

12) It may still be confusing for some of us, but there are already those who are experiencing concepts like multi-chain, cross-chain, and inter-chain through various Web3 services and games. Furthermore, we are facing the era of omni-chain, which is mainly led by Layer Zero or Hyperlane. In fact, for a good user experience, there’s no need to distinguish between these concepts anymore.

Solutions for interoperability among multiple Mainnets are competitively emerging.

13) The blockchain wallet, often pointed out as the biggest issue in the Web3 experience, has evolved significantly from its past form. Through the MPC Wallet and ERC-4337-based Account Abstraction (AA), blockchain wallets are no longer falsely claimed to be easy. The research and products offered by Argent Wallet and DeBank provide us with a lot of inspiration.

14) What’s promising is that in Layer 2 implementations using new technology stacks like zksync or Starknet, AA will be integrated as a basic feature. AA will be perceived not as a “choice” but as a “default.” Similarly, a truly great user experience will be achieved when there is no need to distinguish these terms and concepts anymore. Efforts for a better user experience are ongoing through AA and other methods like Lukso.

15) NFTs continue to diversify in various forms. Teams focusing on oracles like Chainlink are gaining support from creators by developing “Dynamic NFTs” with On-Chain Programmable Royalties. Teams like Limit Break are injecting new vitality into the current NFT market with “ERC721-C.”

16) Amid the development of various NFTs, the “Token Bound Account (TBA)” based on ERC6551 is particularly noteworthy. In the pioneering project of TBA, the Stapleverse community, anyone can participate in the opportunity for “co-creation” with legendary creative director Jeff Staple in the fashion domain through NFTs.

17) MIXtown’s Valhalla character Keira #7030 already has TBA applied, and we are now preparing for the next experiments. (You can verify this directly through this post!)

18) Currently, active participation is taking place in the ERC6551 faction led by Future Primitive, with various creative areas such as Cre8ors, Galverse, the art domain like FewoWorld, the social sphere including Lens Protocol and Spacebar, and gaming with Parallel Colony, Loot2, among others.

3. From On-chain Storytelling to On-chain History

Partial Excerpt from MIXtown’s Initial Plan (June 2023)

19) It may have been somewhat verbose, but all of this is the story of the Web3 world. The physical real world has begun to seamlessly integrate with the digital virtual world in real-time, and the transition costs and experiences required to cross between the two are dramatically improving. Now, everything is within reach.

20) The replicable properties of the digital are increasingly resembling the physical world, and all kinds of values that once existed within it are moving into the digital realm. Within this realm, blockchain plays a crucial role as a ‘network of trust’ and a ‘network of value.’ Currently, in Web3, blockchain cannot be replaced by anything else.

21) The ‘ultimate Metaverse’ that we perceive and anticipate goes beyond simply referring to something that exists within the digital world. It is another world of the reality in which we are currently living, one that is immutable and never-ending. This cannot be adequately explained by the partial concepts of Web3 or on-chain.

22) As the boundaries between the real world and the virtual world become increasingly blurred, this absolute world will exist on top of the digital world and, at the same time, overlap on top of the physical world. The once clearly distinct two worlds are merging into one completely. Again, at the center of this integration is blockchain.”

23) The ultimate destination of ‘On-chain Storytelling’ envisioned by MIXtown is a new form of narrative unfolding on this integrated world. The persistence of the virtual world brought by blockchain, the real-time nature of the virtual world due to advancements in gaming technology, intersecting with emerging AI technologies, all lead to envisioning the potential for the next level of storytelling.

‘Portal,’ a core component within the MIXtown universe.

24) Each AI agent existing on-chain will have various digital assets within connected wallets, freely traversing between the real world and the virtual world, generating numerous transactions on the ‘trust network’ above. These transactions will be persistently recorded on-chain, creating the origin of unique storytelling.

25) Imagine that sending a single NFT to someone’s wallet is like creating a small ripple on a vast lake. This ripple then becomes the butterfly effect, altering the ‘On-chain History’, the collective sum of our stories. We are eager to see such imaginings become a reality soon.

Imagine the Force of the Star Wars universe inherited as NFTs on the On-chain.
