The Red Hat Forums 2017 Interview Part 1 — Red Hat Innovation Labs

As recent as last month, the Red Hat name has just solidified its foothold in Asia by launching their very fist Innovation Labs in Singapore. The third chapter of the open source champion proven Innovation Labs initiative is built and launched in the bid of serving the rapidly growing Asian market. The choice of launching the Innovation Labs in Singapore is down to the fact that Singapore is technically the economic hub of the South East Asian region. Singapore also serves as their South East Asian headquarters making it the ideal place to have a full-fledged Innovation Lab for the Asia region. Red Hat’s Innovation Labs, according to Damian Wong, Vice President and General Manager of Red Hat ASEAN is not just limited to one location though. The Linux for enterprises provider can, in theory easily set up its Innovation Labs in any given space. Known as a pop up lab, Red Hat’s clients do not have to go all the way to Singapore to get a glimpse of how Red Hat works.

We recently had an exclusive chance to speak to Damian Wong and Massimo Ferrari, Red Hat’s Management Strategy Director at their Forum 2017 in Malaysia on the major milestone that is the Innovation Lab in Singapore and also the latest addition in their enterprise solutions family; Ansible Automation. In this first part of a three-part interview we spoke to Damian Wong about the recent launch of the Red Hat Innovation Labs in Singapore and the whole concept of the Innovation Lab.

To kick it off we asked Damian to describe the concept of the recently opened Innovation Labs in Singapore and elaborate on the idea behind the labs itself. The Red Hat Innovation Labs, according to Damian is likened to a kitchen. A place that a recipe is created, a bunch of chefs come together to create something new, hopefully amazing. The argument behind the setting up of the Innovation Lab is allowing the clients to experience innovation the Red Hat way. It is where clients and in-house experts come together to work co-develop applications and programs with all the tools available in the Red Hat repertoire. In a sense the lab encourages a community driven development. The kitchen that is the Red Hat Innovation Lab is equipped with every Red Hat corporate solutions which allows developers to immediately develop something to solve problems and questions in their own company alongside the in-house engineers. At the same time every stakeholder of the development process; even management and marketing will be involved in the process as well if necessary. The Innovation Labs will eventually expose Red Hat’s clients to the Red Hat way of working and developing. The end goal is to assimilate Red Hat’s development culture into the client’s working culture. That way also Red Hat aims to ensure that their clients is able to transform themselves through IT to create a more streamlined structure to be more agile to changes in their own industries.

Then there is something called a Pop Up Innovation Lab for Red Hat’s clients. As explained by Damian, the argument behind pop up labs is the problem of the limitation of innovation. With the Pop Up Labs their argument is that innovation does not have to end at a single location. The Pop Up Lab in Damian’s own words is an innovation lab that is outside the actual innovation lab itself. Obviously a pop up lab that is set up in locations of choice by the client may not be as complete as the actual Innovation Lab itself. The idea of the lab though is not about the tools, the end goal is still similar to the actual Innovation Lab itself; to transform the working processes into a more streamlined culture making the team or organisation more agile in responding to change.

Every lab experience also is tailored to the clients which means that different clients may get very different experiences while using the same tools to solve problems and questions. In that sense there are three types of lab engagement and experience that can be expected from Red Hat’s Innovation/Pop Up Labs. The first is disruption; where an organisation is trying to develop new technologies and methods that might disrupt the market or industry. The second is transformation; where an organisation is trying to digitally transform itself internally and externally. The third is what they recognises as a road trip. The Road Trip is described by Damian as a complete test drive. It is where clients get the full beans; the full experience of what Red Hat can do for their company in terms of digital transformations and other corporate solutions.
