As Monbiot writes, ‘…far from curing the disease of isolation, [this] intensifies social comparison to the point at which, having consumed all else, we start to prey upon ourselves.’
If we bring our loneliness to the internet, what do we take away?

In a perfect world, we would utilize social media for building of community.

In reality, people tend to only want to speak not listen on social media. Maybe it is the size of their own baggage maybe it is not, but the reality is thus far social media has failed at building community of people who speak and simultaneously are willing to listen. Perhaps the attitude is, “put your baggage out there only if you do not need anyone to talk you through it.” Who knows?

That being said, social media remains relevant because perhaps someday that transition still can occur. In the meantime, everyone has to decide which components of social media work best for their objectives. It is why I am grateful for a platform such as Medium — what for me right now is the fulcrum of my social media engagement.

But can I demand building of community as threshold for relevance of the Medium platform? Absolutely not!! As the adage goes, “Rome was not built in a day.” In fact, Rome was a colony of the Greeks until it was not. Do I hold out hope Medium can help build community over time? Absolutely!!! But all things in their own time, alongside appreciation of what is good but not perfect.

Looks like things are on an upward tick with you. Good luck and all the best.
