I have a confession to make. Sometimes, when I’m bored, I’ll dig through my junk emails to get an idea about how companies and individuals are using email marketing. For marketers, this is a good idea, because you can see how funnels are devised and even learn about trends in copywriting. The other side of the coin is that you gain a sense of what to avoid. In that spirit, I present to you a list of 5 things to avoid in all of your email marketing endeavors.

  1. Having an unorganized email list. — Keeping your list tidy and preferably segmented is the best idea going forward.
  2. Not including an unsubscribe link in the email. — SPAM tactics. ‘Nuff said.
  3. Not bcc’ing the e-mail list. — It’s rude and looks unprofessional
  4. Having images that don’t link to anything. — This is a lost opportunity and it looks unprofessional.
  5. Not having the email optimized for mobile. — With so much traffic coming from mobile, this is simply a missed opportunity.

Those were some of the biggest no-nos that I encountered while digging through my own emails. For good measure, I’m going to include two additional things to avoid.

  1. Leaving content from the email template — It’s so easy to avoid, so avoid it. Ok?
  2. Not Sending a Test E-mail to yourself. — A little work here can save big headaches later on down the road.

By avoiding the practices that i have outlined above, your email marketing campaigns are going to rock!
