Review: Reading this book, I had flashbacks to being a shy, quiet little girl in a Catholic elementary school ruled by nuns who were mostly sent to the convent as a fast track for them (and their parents) to get to heaven. We weren’t Bible-d as Evangelicans are but there were those Baltimore catechisms (blue and green) to memorize and recite. Never to contemplate, though .Or question. Or disagree with. And the shaming of weekly confessions followed by “punishments” of praying the Our Father and Hail Mary. And the Lenten “giving up” of things like candy and gum and TV demanded by the nuns, also as a fast track to heaven and a long track to hell. Not having these things at home TO give up, I was so fearful of the consequences that I gave up breathing, held my breath as long as I could, pretty much on a school day daily basis.
And then one day as I was reading one more book given to me from the school library about virgin martyrs who became saints because they were burned at the stake, impaled or had their breasts cut off in order to be true Christians, I decide something about all of this was really wrong.
Chris Katzer addresses the harsh and unforgiving religious dogma that still is part of too much of modern, political Christianity.
Deepak Chopra: “Religion is belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.” There is so much grace in finding your way out of religious fear, shame,, brainwashing, judgementalism and elitism and into the recognition that there IS something greater then oneself, something more to being human then much of religion permits one to be. And it IS possible to be quite spiritual inside a beautiful, quiet church, walking in a forest, watching a sunset, playing with grandchildren, petting a dog, holding Grandmother’s rosary, seeing the eyes of God in a stranger. Review: I’m not sure how or when Chris Kratzers writings crossed my path. Power of the internet I would guess. I could not be more thrilled! I’m 75 years old and have been through the gauntlet of ‘bible teaching ‘. A Nasicisst husband who fully believed that God was attached to his hip and cannot do any wrong. God spoke to him and as a woman I best listen. All done in a charming and charismatic way for our friends. Spent 34 years including 12 years living with 3 other women god told him he could have. Needless to say, by the time I was able to leave with my kids, my head was pretty messed up. Landed with the Foursquare Church..After lots of events that started not making sense, I choose to leave the building and will not return. I have a grandson who is Adhd. Sometimes he just likes to spin around and around. When asked why he does it? It makes my brain feel better. At first it was really hard for me to read Chris’s writing . The truth and power in his words that came through to me made me sob. Healing has happened. My brain feels so much better now. I now read “Stupid Sh*t heard in Church” as a daily devotion. Finally a daily devotion book that heals my brain.
I cannot thank you enough for speaking truth into this world. Please keep on being Brave! The world really needs to hear what you have to say.

Review: My brother-in-law who was raised in the Methodist Church read some of Chris Kratzer’s posts that I shared on Facebook and was puzzled at why he stayed with the church so long. I told him that unless he was raised in a very conservative denomination like I was he would not fully understand the author’s convictions. If you grew up in a very conservative Baptist church like I did, but now believe that many things they taught were not truthful and you want to move on, this is the book for you. My former church taught too much hell and guilt and not enough love and forgiveness. I read this book. In chapter after chapter Chris helps you understand that what you were led to believe is not necessarily the way God intended it to be.

Review: Chris has done it once again — exposed the skewed practises of what we call Christianity. The old rules and regulations have been exposed for what they were — crippling, subjugating and imprisoning us and worst of all, burdening us with guilt. No more! We are free and God is love.
I had to add the “digging through garbage” because be warned — he does not mince words. Sometimes the language may be harsh but then again, isn’t this what all Christians need to do? Dig though the expletives, the cursing to find the real truth. This might be what your grandpa or church elder needs to read but the wording is harsh and may not be what they are willing to read. That is my only critique — the words may not reach the audience who really needs to read this due to the use of harsh wording.

Review: Because of my life experience, many of the thing I read in this book are consistent with what I have learned in the past. From this book I am glad to see some of my ideas affirmed and also get new ideas to consider. But I think some of the less appropriate language in this book is problematic, not because I am offended by it, but because I do not think that I can recommend this book to some of my friends and family who would be offended by it. Some people who I think would benefit from this book would probably be offended if I even said its title with the appropriate replacement for the “ * “ in it.

Review: Truth is somewhat difficult to read when it contradicts what I was taught as I was growing up. It took me from November until June to read this book as I read a little at a time over the months, sometimes setting it aside for a few days or weeks even. Religious mindsets were shaken up and turned upside down. I knew as I was reading that I was being liberated. The truths revealed in this book were very freeing. A question I had in the back of my mind about the crucifixion of Jesus was answered in one of the final messages. I encourage everyone to read and experience for yourself.
