Thoughts on Journalism

Crowd sourcing of information leaves the journalists’ roles to the side of the curb. It makes it harder for the journalists to do their job, including putting out the important news. I believe that this “tactic” or issue can affect the way journalists provide information to the general public. However, crowd sourcing of information could also be a good thing. I am going to look on the bright side, saying that this could help journalists to piece to together information that they are missing.

I have never heard of doxing until this week. Although, from what I found researching here and there, is that it is basically in real life “trolling”, but more serious. Doxing can be considered a real crime, by invading someone’s life and privacy. It could break and ruin someone’s career and life. I believe that it absolutely causes ethical concerns in the newsroom. I can’t imagine why someone, let alone a journalist would ever try to do it.

I would handle a story like the Boston Bombing with decency and compassion for those affected. However, I would reveal only important information to provide it to the general public. At the moment, I am not entirely sure how we can put raw social media moments like breaking news into context.
