SKALE is building a layer of infrastructure on top of Ethereum that will allow developers to build their projects faster and with better performance. We do this by building an elastic blockchain network that can have thousands of independent blockchains, sidechains, storage chains, and other types of subchains — all tied to the Ethereum public mainnet. This network will be comprised of thousands of independent nodes in combination with security guarantees of a Layer 1 but architected to use resources in a more efficient and versatile way. A thousand validators in the SKALE Network, for example, can support 8,000 independent…

As a cool market warms, a reprieve for one of blockchain’s most foundational concepts

Section 1: Dreams Of Decentralization

It has been pointed out by some intrepid observers that Satoshi’s original Bitcoin white paper doesn’t use the word “decentralization” even once.

This is true. Yet it is also true that the foundational premise of the document is that any trust-based model for financial transactions creates an inevitable reliance on intermediaries. These intermediaries may solve for the inherent weaknesses of the system, but they do so at a meaningful cost, which includes eliminating the viability of entire categories of transactions.

Bitcoin…

With the rise of the Internet, people have been afforded an incredible amount of optionality in how they elect to spend their money and who they decide to do business with. Recognizing this fact, businesses have responded by creating proprietary systems that capture user data and make it nigh impossible for them to migrate to a competitor.

With businesses focused on locking in users to their service(s) so that they can continue billing them (or selling their data) despite the relative quality of what it is that they are providing, there is oftentimes much to be desired beyond the onboarding…

While our sense of how the market is doing is driven by price, a much better and more fundamental metric is how the technology and infrastructure is developing.

Last December, at our final team all-hands of the year, I made sure to dedicate some time to take stock of the state the state of the crypto markets and industry as a whole.

Whereas 2017 ended at a peak of (in retrospect irrational) exuberance, 2018 ended with prices down in many cases over 90% off of their all time highs. In many parts of the community, those declines and eventual stagnation…

When the SKALE Labs team set out on our mission in 2017, we had a very clear plan and vision.

The first phase of this plan involved the architecting, building, and testing of a novel decentralized technology known as the SKALE Network. In the second phase, SKALE Labs was to transfer all assets relating to this new technology to a foundation erected for the purposes of fostering a community around the promulgation and support of SKALE and other decentralized technologies. …

A look at Sidechains, Elastic Sidechains, Plasma, and State Channels

For those of us closely following technology innovation in Layer 2, we are clearly seeing it as the arena where the vast majority of execution will take place in decentralized networks. For that reason, it is critically important for Layer 2, the “Execution Layer”, to be configurable, fast, cost-effective, and secure without compromising decentralization.

In this post, we’ll take a close look at the advantages and tradeoffs of these popular Execution Layer methods:

  • Sidechains
  • Elastic Sidechains
  • State Channels
  • Plasma

Sidechains

Sidechains are independent blockchains which work in a complementary fashion with another blockchain to provide enhanced functionality and lower costs. This…

Bonjour! Salut à tous et toutes! The SKALE core team has arrived in Paris.

After a lot of fun launching the DevNet and great success stories at ETH Denver, the DevNet is ready for hacking at ETH Paris.

Here are a few details on the SKALE Network, bounties, and ideas for the hackathon. More to follow on the SKALE Dev Community Discord.

Why SKALE at the Hackathon?

SKALE empowers Ethereum DApps to scale solidity smart contracts in a secure, reliable, cost-effective manner. In short — with two clicks you can deploy your dApp to a fast sidechain with flexible blocksizes, 1 second blocktimes, and no…

Bringing SKALE to ETHDenver

Hello, everyone! After participating in a number of events in the ecosystem (ETHBerlin, ETHSF, Web3 Summit, Devcon IV) and seeing all of the cool hacks that people have been BUIDLing, we are beyond excited to see what people will BUIDL with SKALE. After months of heads-down researching, coding, and testing, we are proud to announce that ETHDenver Hackers will be able to use SKALE chains in the hackathon. SKALE will also be sponsoring several bounties.

For those not familiar, the SKALE Network helps developers scale their decentralized apps with Layer 2 smart contract execution, speedy transactions, low-costs, storage, and strong…

Hello all, and welcome to the SKALE Asynchronous Interview Series!

At SKALE, we talk to a lot of thought leaders in blockchain and wanted to explore a way to share some of our learnings with the community. This series focuses on providing quality information relating to both blockchain / decentralization as well as those personalities who are moving the space forward. The content is designed to be fun, informative, and to give you a peek into where thought leaders see this industry going.

Going with the theme of SKALE Consensus, we do these in a distributed asynchronous fashion; i.e., I…
