Nike is adding an additional uniform edition to NBA team’s repertoire for the upcoming season. The new “Earned Edition” will join the Association, Icon, Statement, City, and Classic uniform editions debuted last season.

According to Twitter user @caseyvitelli, the Earned Edition uniforms will be given to the 16 teams who made the playoffs the season before. The uniforms will debut on Christmas day, or shortly thereafter for teams who do not play on Christmas. Unlike previous Christmas Uniforms, these won’t be one and done, with teams wearing them as much as they’d like following their debut.

According to leaks on Lockervision, we know that the Thunder’s Earned Edition uniform will be orange. OKC’s Christmas Day opponent, the Houston Rockets, Earned Edition uniform is expected to be red. Because of this, the Thunder will not debut their Earned Edition uniform until December 30 against Dallas.

Oklahoma City is slated to wear their newest uniform eight times in total this upcoming season, four times on the road and four at home.

Additionally, there has been a rumor that the Earned edition uniforms will simply be a recolored version of the City edition uniforms. Thanks to leaks, we know that this is true of the Heat and the Trailblazers. The problem with this theory is that according to the leaked color code listings, both the New Orleans Pelican’s City Edition and Earned Edition uniforms are white, which would make that theory impossible.

I have an alternate theory, albeit a similar one. What may be the case, is that the Earned Uniforms will be a recolored version one of the other uniforms, not necessarily just the City ones. This prevents Nike & the NBA from having uniform overload, but creates a simple way to celebrate Playoff teams, and probably more importantly, an easy way to make more money.

With that theory in mind, I went ahead and created orange versions of all four of the Thunder’s uniforms:

Sign me up for either the Statement or City uniforms in orange.

This little nugget of uniform news can fulfill us for now, but ultimately we’ll have to wait and see until something official is unveiled.

Stay tuned, and follow us on twitter for more info.
