MY MOST RECENT CHALLENGING LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Hi,my name is Okeremeta Jude Tega, I recently applied to join Andela as a developer and the journey so far has been filled with fun and trying times in equal proportions. Do join me as I take you on a tour of my experience so far.
Growing up, I have always viewed the life of a programmer as boring and “uni-directional” (literally sitting in front of a computer all day long with fingers flying over their keyboards and staring blankly into nothingness at lines upon lines of a jumble of “nonsense” they refer to as codes.
An old saying I recall now goes thus “A lion is only beautiful from a distance”, borrowing this context I can say after my brief encounter with the world of programming since my application to Andela, I have come to realise that programming is probably the most “beautiful nonsense” I have come to know.
The thrill you get from clicking the run button for a program you have written and you get the output you desire printed on the console is indescribable.
But …
Here is where the real test begins, the constant mental battle you have to fight when faced with codes that just plain refuse to do as you tell them to, the searching through lines upon lines of code searching for “bugs” that are causing your program to malfunction even with advanced tools to help with resolving these sort of issues can most times be overwhelming to the point where you just decide to “close shop” and call it quits.
It is this bitter-sweet experience that I find my most challenging recent learning experience, there are days when I wake up and I pray not to stumble into any line of code be it on my screen or any other person’s, but with time I have come to realise that every day is a good day to code and I know that hard-work and perseverance has never let anyone down before and I believe if I stick with it long enough it will stick with me for all time.
On a final note, I have come to accept that the journey will not be easy so I am geared up and no matter how hard it gets I will plow on because I know it will be worth it at the end.
