Okon VIP Client Spotlight: Shell
How being a wife, stepmother, and having a successful job didn’t stop Shell from living a healthy lifestyle
What made you want to start your fitness journey?
My fitness journey started about two years ago. I woke up one day and I was somewhere 40–50 pounds heavier than I was when I had graduated college 2 years prior. I was so sad and so angry. I was very active my whole life through sports. Post-college life I found myself living a very sedentary life; the gym was not a priority and my metabolism couldn’t support the cheese, carb, high fat proteins I was used to eating when I was a collegiate athlete and on the ice or in the gym a total of 2–4 hours a day.
That was September 29, 2015. That next day, I made an immediate change. My fitness goal was simple: “move my body every day.” My dietary goal was simple: the Whole30. It was a great kick start that I needed to clean eating: no dairy, gluten, soy, legumes, grains. Vegetables and lean meat. After about a year and a half on my own, I had lost 25–30 pounds and my fitness level had increased considerably. I then knew I needed to get over this plateau. That’s where Angie Marie and Team Okon came in! It was the best decision I have made for my personal wellness in my whole life.
What is some advice to someone who is just getting started?
Don’t over think it! Angie gives you everything you need to be successful. To be honest, it’s quite fool-proof. Follow the meal plan and the workouts and you WILL see results. Be patient. Trust the process. It can be scary to put your physical wellbeing in the hands of someone else, but I promise you Angie is caring, kind, hardworking, and passionate for your health. Your success is her success. Together, you can achieve greatness!
What inspires you the most?
My progress pictures! Since week 4, Angie has sent me my side-by-side progress pictures and it’s what gets me out of bed and keeps me on the stair climber. The scale drops and the tape moves but there’s nothing like that visual progress.
What have been the biggest obstacles getting started?
Meal prepping to this level of detail was hard at first. I didn’t even own measuring cups/spoons! Ha! I am also a wife and a stepmother so I couldn’t just think about my meals for the week. My suggestion here is BUY MORE chicken/rice/potatoes/whatever is on your meal plan for the week. Things shrink…a LOT…when cooked. I learned that the hard way a few times! Whatever you don’t portion out just toss in the freezer and use next week!
Why did you choose to work with Angie Marie as your coach?
One of my life-long best friends and teammates, Molly, has worked with Angie for about a year. She saw amazing results and the way she would speak of Angie’s commitment to her program was inspiring. She said “she won’t let me fail.” I looked at the Okon Fitness’ site and read some of the blog posts and decided to apply.
It was a big step to take as I knew it would be a big change! I not only was doing this for myself but I knew I couldn’t let Molly down — she was going to vouch for me and I take my relationships very seriously. Once I had submitted my application I sat and refreshed my email about 30 times a day until I got that response email that I had been accepted on to the team and I was SO EXCITED.
We hear you just got married — How exciting! Do you feel this program helped you feel confident on your big day?
Oh gosh, yes. Absolutely. The greatest part of this whole process was putting on my dress the day of our wedding and feeling so comfortable and confident. My back was toned and my stomach was flat. I hold a lot of weight in my face/neck and to have a beautiful profile and a slimmer face in my pictures was unbelievable. It is difficult to put into words how special that whole day was but to be in amazing shape was the icing, the cherry, the candles on the biggest, most delicious cake of my whole life.

Being a busy hard working woman, how have you managed all the things in your life?
Priorities! Life is all about prioritizing. As a wife and a stepmother, I couldn’t be too selfish about this whole process. I had to make this work with my personal life. I am unbelievably blessed with a husband who supports, encourages, and partakes in a healthy lifestyle.
Once I started my program, he hopped on board 100%. I had to meal prep in a way that worked for the whole family. My husband followed my meal plan and loved it. The convenience of no mess or questioning what’s for dinner — he was able to pull out his Tupperware every couple hours and have a healthy meal all complete and ready for him. He was patient with early alarms and late nights. I had to be a little more selfish with my time from work — I have a role that a lot is expected from me and I had to learn to be more productive with less time. I would NOT let a late meeting keep me from the gym.
Most people think of the gym as a luxury or a “I’ll get there if I can swing it” but I now treat it like a non-negotiable responsibility. I wouldn’t say “I’d like to take off and get to the gym” I would say “I need to leave and go to the gym. I’ll be back online later but I will be unavailable for the next two hours.” The looks on people’s faces was that of surprise but I didn’t care. My health and well-being is more important than another couple hours of work each day. My stress levels dropped, my energy levels were up. I was a higher performer in the workplace because of my routine.

Have those around you been supportive?
Those that matter — YES! Absolutely, 100%. Close friends, family, and my husband are my biggest cheerleaders. They are kind and patient and ask questions because they’re curious and not because they’re skeptical. They’re motivating and willing to help. I have wonderful people in my life in so many ways. They show up well for me and I show up well for them. The love and joy I have in my daily life is insurmountable and I cannot thank God enough for them in my life.
The opinions of those who don’t matter — absolutely not. Coworkers who I’m not close with and acquaintances think my lifestyle choices are “crazy” or “overboard.” I would have people at work commenting on my meals saying “ew, that looks so gross” or “that is NOT enough food for a meal” (not knowing that I eat SIX MEALS PER DAY).
I would have people say “I guarantee once your wedding is done you’ll go back to eating ‘normal’ food.” Or I’d often get justifications from others like “I am just way too busy with 17 kids and working 98 hours per week” #exaggerations. As if I am a slacker of some sort? But it doesn’t matter because those are not my people! I let it motivate.
Do you have any mottos or sayings that you live by everyday
1 Corinthians 16:14: “Do everything in love.”
What this means to me: Everything you do in your life, do it with love.
Love your spouse. Love your children. Love your body. They deserve the best version of you. At all times, remember that life is a gift and let it be filled with love and joy. If I find myself loathing going to the gym I actively change my mind. How lucky am I to have the physical ability to lift? How lucky am I to have the financial means to be a member at a nice gym and hire a coach? This isn’t a chore, this is a blessing!
