I believe that the one singular change we could make that would most impact how the economy is understood and managed would be to rename the “debt” to “private reserves”. This would remove the scary part of the conversation that people naturally relate to their own finances, and it would let the people know who are beneficiaries of the tax policy as the vast majority of them have no “reserves”. Then when conservative deficit hawks want to talk about reducing that number the people will know exactly where to concentrate tax policy to do so instead of buying into an agenda of austerity.
