The social contract has been so long defined as “taking” from individuals to support the commons that the taking has become the goal for many, if not most. If one is handed the means to fulfill the social contract without the need to take from anyone it can be deflating to those who have created much of their identity around the struggle. It’s much like noticing that the door you have been pulling on for some time without success has a “push” sign attached. While the objective is suddenly much easier to achieve, the mere act of achieving requires introspection and a re-evaluation of oneself.
