We may have been able to avoid nuclear war and cure deadly infectious diseases, but we will not succeed this time. The reason is, climate change is a disaster catered specifically to tackle the humankind and its inherent vices.

When asked recently about the most dangerous threat to human civilization, Noam Chomsky did not hesitate to answer: “There are two overwhelming dangers, huge shadows looming over everything. The first one is the environmental catastrophe, which is coming. We can debate over how long it will be, but it’s coming.” After taking his time to accuse the short-term logics of capitalists exploiting the Earth’s resources, Chomsky went on to the second looming shadow: “The nuclear war, which should not be underestimated.” I am certainly no man to argue with Noam Chomsky, but I believe that, despite the horrors of a potential nuclear war, climate change is a one-of-a-kind problem of unprecedented nature and scale. …
