Have you read anything by Elizabeth Strout? I have read (or listened to, in part) all of her Olive Kitteridge books as well as “The Burgess Boys” and “My Name is Lucy Barton.” She will probably not become one of my absolute favorites, but her books are family stories, set largely in New York and Maine, and they explore the complexity and subtlety of relationships in a truly compassionate way, from multiple points of view. “Tender, tough-minded, loving, and deeply illuminating” — yes, I would agree. Definitely recommended. And I will probably read more of her books, too.
Also, I would like to watch the Olive Kitteridge miniseries some day; I am glad I read the books first, but I really admire Frances McDormand’s work (she plays Olive herself), so this is definitely something on my “to watch” list.
