Cool Boarders 3 by 989 Studios
My brother and I originally played this as a demo on the PlayStation. I did an internet search and these games are listed as also being on the disc: Crash 3, Medievil, Gran Turismo, A Bug’s Life, Cool Boarders 3, NFL Gameday ’99, Rally Cross 2, Tomb Raiders, Wild 9, Bust a Move 4, Metal Gear Solid, NHL Faceoff ’99, and Brave Fencer Musashi.
Eventually, my cousin Josh acquired the full game. We played beyond what was offered in the demo, but that first-and-only unlocked level was by far the best one. Even the erotically-named “Devil’s Butt” set of courses didn’t even touch the quality of the first slope, and the other event types (slalom, half-pipe, etc.) weren’t worth spending much time with.
I made this purchase whilst in Portland for 3USD. I expected it to suck since I’m not blinded by nostalgia, and it really didn’t (besides the clunky collisions). The first level was a great time, especially in the splitscreen with my friend Wael. He actually enjoyed his time with it, despite his high standards for games.
I’m playing the frustrating tournament mode, slowly progressing because I have the option of not saving after losing an event. I tried playing through honestly, but it’s too easy to screw up, the possibility of victory able to vanish within the first couple of seconds in a race.
Book
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn: Its appeal is that the story is entirely told through letters (the postal kind), while letters (the graphemes) are progressively removed from everybody’s vocabularies. Charming, elegant, and worth so many other buzzwords.
Music
Another Green World, Before and After Science, Lux, The Ship, and Small Craft on a Milk Sea by Brian Eno (the latter with Jon Hopkins & Leo Abrahams): Five albums that I loved for different reasons. The Ship is an outstanding, epic, strange journey.
I didn’t really care for The Feast of the Broken Heart by Hercules & Love Affair and Horizons by Painted Palms, but I may grow into them someday, I hope.
