Getting the Most Out of Social Media: Information Retrieval

Semantic context offers one alternative for information retrieval in social networks using human mirroring heuristics. Fundamentally this can be done by focusing on the who, what, where, and when within the information spaces of a social database. When the scope of a search is conducted that references these metrics successful context-matches within the information is possible. As well link relationships can easily be drawn which would represent a simple model of an otherwise complex set of context elements.

Despite the difficulty involved in fully exploring a virtually infinitely large number of actors, feasible summary evaluations are possible by merely evaluating the guiding embeddings of human social context.

Before even beginning a semantics analysis random items must be drawn out through pre-filtering. There are many valid methods for doing this including: semantics, social connection based search, geography and social-geography based searching, and search with pre-filtering based on geography or social-geography followed by random selection. Of these many studies recommend a geography based clustering of samples.

Having a sample one can begin preprocessing the data. Porter2 stemming dates its origins to 1979 and is a useful process for removing common endings of words in English. Stop-words should also be removed using text-analysis. In most cases it is also necessary to scan for evidence of citations or the repetition of prior commentary. While services like those offered by MetaCarta are effective for geographic information extraction. Alternatively the Wikipedia API can be used in an way that geographic information can be corresponded to ‘where’ tags of the respective data.
