The Decline of War

This means that for peace in the world, the most important thing is that the vast majority of Muslims accept peaceful, liberal interpretations of their faith. Interpretations that don’t interpret jihad as actual war, allow everyone to make their own decision about what to believe and are able to accept criticism.

There are peaceful and violent interpretations of all religions and political ideologies. At the moment, Islam appears most associated with violence as the move to modern tolerance has not occurred to the same extent within it. This does not need to be the case, and is not unique to Islam (other religiously motivated conflicts like the Northern Ireland Troubles coincidentally ended around the time jihadist violence increased). But in the present time violent interpretations of Islam that do not allow individual freedom are the greatest obstacle to world peace. We need to work out how to promote peaceful interpretations.
