The Doors of Cyprus
The Door that Leads Home
Cyprus has some of the prettiest doors I have encountered; greens and blues appear to be the predominant colours, many of neo-classical style. Bougainvillea, plants and trees are often found adjacent to the front door, creating a colourful entrance into the homes and hearts of the Cypriot people.
I took most of these photos during lockdown, a time when people were closed inside their homes. As I walk around the villages these days, often the doors are open with the occupants sitting outside doing embroidery, drinking coffee or chatting with the neighbours.
The open doors cast a glance into homes that have been inhabited in some cases for centuries. Generations have grown up within these walls — the voices are silent but the memories linger in the place they once called home.
