Does it really work? A medicinal commodity dating back centuries and used to improve quality of life, Cannabis oil or dagga oil as it is more colloquially known in South Africa, is an extract from the cannabis plant. The two most common types of cannabis plants are Sativa and Indica.

As a supplement or alternative to conventional cancer treatments, cannabis products are widely believed to provide both healing properties and relief from the effects of conventional treatments, which can wreak havoc on the body in the process of trying to heal it.

It can be confusing trying to work through the hype around dagga oil for cancer treatment, so let’s weigh in on some of the facts.

Cannabis/Dagga Oil Side Effects

Depending on the source of the cannabis oil and the extraction method used, the resulting product contains, amongst an array of other compounds, varying concentrations of the chemical compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The presence of THC is where the magic happens, but the compound is also responsible for the psychoactive effects commonly associated with recreational use. Start low and take it slow with doses, this will allow the body to build a tolerance for THC over time.

Its counterpart cannabidiol (CBD) is also largely celebrated for its medicinal qualities, but without the psychoactive effects of THC. When combined with THC, it can reduce the anxiety or paranoia sometimes experienced with THC.

When should you take cannabis oil? Consider taking it at night if you are wary about the effects of the THC.

Dagga Oil Benefits

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the cannabis plant. Both THC and CBD mimic the natural cannabinoids within the body, which in turn can offer symptomatic relief by restoring internal balance and function to the endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system is a modulatory system that manages pain, mood and appetite, amongst others. When consumed, these compounds interact with the cannabinoid receptors throughout the body and brain by way of the endocannabinoid system.

This interaction results in symptomatic relief from cancer related ailments and those resulting from undergoing aggressive conventional cancer treatments.

Benefits of Cannabis Oil:

  • Cancer fighting properties
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Assists with pain management
  • Improves appetite
  • Assists in restoring sleep
  • Reduces nausea related to conventional cancer treatment

Dagga/Cannabis Oil Uses

There are a myriad of uses and benefits of cannabis oil which can be categorized more easily by the key ‘hero’ cannabinoids present, CBD and THC.

Key Benefits and Uses of CBD

Derived from the male cannabis plant, or hemp plant (marijuana’s cousin) cannabidiol has no recreational uses and may prove beneficial for moderating the psychological effects of its counterpart THC.

CBD may result in reduced anxiety, through consumption of strains of marijuana that have high levels of CBD present.

  • Non-psychoactive
  • Analgesic properties for pain relief
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Cancer fighting properties
  • Anticipated anti-tumour effect, may reduce cancer cells from spreading
  • Antioxidant properties
  • Reduction in chemotherapy related nausea

CBD products include oils, balms, food supplements, pills, vaporizing and more. Cannabidiol may interact with other medications, so as a precaution consult a doctor prior to taking CBD.

Key Benefits and Uses of THC

Derived from the female cannabis plant, or marijuana plant (hemp’s cousin) the psychotropic drug, THC, is most concentrated in the cannabis flower bud.

  • Improved mood and relaxation
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Sleep induction
  • Analgesic properties for pain relief
  • Decrease in chemotherapy related nausea
  • May slow/reduce tumour growth

THC can also be administered by using wax, suppositories, shatter, dabbing, smoking and vaporizing to name a few. Tetrahydrocannabinol may interact with other drugs, so do thorough research prior to taking any products. Sometimes the interactions are even favourable.

Dagga Oil for Sale

Although legislation has been amended in South Africa to allow adults to cultivate and consume marijuana at home, it is still regarded illegal to purchase or sell marijuana products. Government still needs to determine age restrictions around personal use, and exactly how much can be cultivated and used in private.

How to Make Dagga Oil

Apart from offering symptomatic relief from disease and conventional treatment-related ailments, medical marijuana is believed by many to pose a cure for cancer itself, making cannabis oil rather hot property.

Limitations on the purchase of cannabis products means that many cancer sufferers are resorting to making their own dagga oil, to varying degrees of success.

Every man and his dog seem to have advice on how to make cannabis oil. There are various methods for cannabis oil extraction, and the final product will largely depend on the quality of the raw plant material, extraction materials and the method used.

Working with solvents can be risky too, as they are highly flammable and should be handled with a great deal of care.
Extraction Methods for making cannabis oil:

  • CO² Extraction
  • Ethanol (alcohol) extraction
  • Butane extraction
  • Cannabis infused carrier oils

Hemp Oil for Cancer

Often associated with marijuana, hemp is typically grown outdoors and lacks flowering buds. While both are derivatives from the cannabis plant family, hemp conversely contains only trace amounts of THC, less than 0.3% to be exact.

The CBD-rich, plant-based superfood is used to produce hemp oil and is also widely used to manufacture textiles.

The cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 found in our bodies are stimulated by hemp, which in turn increases immune function, decreases inflammation, assists in pain management and supplies therapeutic relief for cancer-related symptoms.

Hopefully in the future leading pharmaceutical chains will supply cannabis oil, For now you won’t find either CBD oil or cannabis oil at Dischem, however it is a point of call for hemp based food supplements, skincare products and sports nutrition. When searching for hemp oil, Clicks is a stockist of the popular CBD hemp oil Elixinol.

As very little public research has been conducted, information on the THC versus CBD for cancer debate, and cannabis oil dosage, isn’t yet readily available in the cannabis oil and cancer treatment connection.
