Productivity Quick Tip #2 — I was late for a meeting today and that’s a good thing…

On paper, you might think that being late couldn’t possibly be a good thing. You’d be partially right, but there’s a silver lining.

There’s a fairly decent reason I was 20 minutes late for my meeting and that reason is that the meeting wasn’t in my calendar.

I use Calendly to handle all of my client bookings. It’s an awesome little tool that saves a HEAP of to and fro when organising meetings and I’ve come to rely on it almost exclusively.

It’s just one of many little mundane tasks that is not now on my mental list of things to contend with.

In this instance, I suspect Candy (not the lady’s real name) didn’t completely finish her booking with me via calendly.

So, I double checked my emails and, sure enough, 6 days ago I’d agreed to meet at 3pm at a cafe.

Here’s my point, the fact that I couldn’t recall agreeing to meet someone only 6 days ago might be concerning. But the fact is that my brain has come to totally rely on my digital tools and this frees up thinking time and memory for more complex and involved things like writing code or planning strategies.

The more I can outsource brain function to technology, the better — as long as the technology works. But even when it doesn’t, it’s still a better solution that having to constantly remember where I’m supposed to be every minute of every day because my brain (and yours too) has a limited amount of capacity and when you’re super busy, anything you can do to optimise this capacity is worth doing…
