Twitter Is Still Too Easy To Hate.
Twitter still has a abuse and hate problem.
Just yesterday another developer called it quits on the popular media service. Producer for Mortal Kombat Shaun Himmerick, decided he had enough when a user tweeted an abusive message directed towards Shaun’s wife on Twitter.
This was a problem that YouTube, Facebook and many more services have experienced and I see Twitters only solution is to implement a real name policy. I cringe to think that this is the solution and yet I am certain no amount of filtering, censorship or “flagging as abuse” will quell the angry anonymity of the net.
I left Twitter months ago, and it is a shame considering how lovely I believe the core product to be. In techie terms Twitter is the worlds best RSS reader.
I had a great laugh when Curt Schilling went Batman on his daughters online anonymous abuser — getting them dox’d and fired from “real life” in the name of accountability. A win for the good guys, certainly, though how many of us have a Curt Schilling on our side?
Throughout all this, Twitter is still making money, which proves they have a good business model. It’s issue is the negative image they promote around making it too easy to hate. To be fair, it seems that @dickc recognizes this is a growth problem. Twitter seems more associated with the evils of Uber, rather than the Facebook and Googles of industry.
Actions speak louder than words and Twitter seems to be focused more on shareholders and less on being meaningful to its users. I would not call this out if Twitter did not so publicly claim the opposite.
