Three days a week with a Socialpreneur.

So, I recently landed an intern job for a non-profit organization that brings techies and brilliant minds together to work as a community to solve social issues. This was a big deal. Let me tell you why!
Earlier this year, I had the privilege to participate in an experimental learning program in a form of an Hackathon called DementiaHack. Hacking for a social cause during my first snowy winter in Toronto was the best possible thing I could ask for. I saw millennials, myself included, toiling intensively for 34 hours to come up with sustainable solutions for people living with Dementia.
Picture 300 developers in a room for solid 34 hours, hacking their way through an illness that affects us all in some capacity.
I was intrigued with the level of detail the creators of the Hackathon had to consider in order to create the world’s foremost Hackathon on dementia. I thought to myself, this had to be the work of a socialpreneur — someone with an unquenchable thirst to solve social issues in their society.
I figured my seemingly curious take on the massive success of this event could not have been a mere coincidence. In the past, I have been inspired by people with a heart for serving selflessly. The DementiaHack experience heightened my inspiration to new levels. I knew to start living the dream of mine I had to wake up.
That was why when the opportunity to serve as an intern in the same non-profit that produced the DementiaHack arrived, I thought, ‘what are the odds’. I now get to learn 3 days a week from a true socialpreneur about how to be attentive to the needs in my community and finding available resources to bridge the divide. And on top of that, I get to be a part of the next exciting Fishhackathon, a medium to bring techie and fishery experts together to develop sustainable fishing solutions. There is also an opportunity to go home to my motherland to see how to trigger discussions on a sustainable and meaningful community.
