The Meltwater.org community is a culturally diverse one. We have residents from around the world, including 6 African countries. This comes with a peculiar challenge, pronouncing people’s names correctly.

I will be building a simple Javascript project — PÈMÍ to help people learn to pronounce names correctly.

About African names

My name is a set of instructions and history, let me elaborate

Gbekeloluwa, my first name means “Trust in God”, and that is one of my anchors in life.

Olufotebi, my last name is a story about accepting Christianity during a period of strife, literarily it means “The one God gave through strife”.

Some African names tell a story, and not getting the pronunciation right is simply impertinent. However we don’t take offence at a mispronunciation, we laugh it off, cos we are cool like that.

Project meta

  • The design for PÈMÍ will be a mobile only design.
  • I will be trying out Adobe XD for the designs.
  • I will be using Javascript.
  • I will be trying out React as the frontend Javascript framework.

Project timeline

During the day I am with the JoppaLogic team, providing a delightful delivery experience to the residents of Accra. I am also making an attempt on work-life balance, as we all should, so I will be giving myself 4 weeks to release the alpha version.

Initial design

Nothing much to see yet, just an empty state mockup of what I think will be the main screen.

PÈMÍ design: empty state of main screen

Conclusion

I’m still tossing around ideas on how the app experience is going to be like, and figuring out stuff but I will endeavor to write a weekly update on medium.
