The Power to Choose.

I haven’t lived on this great planet for many years and I can’t say I have summed up all of human existence into a simple idea. But one thing I have observed is that there comes a time in our lives where whatever happens to us either good or bad is a product of our choices.

We are all born, no one dropped from the sky or grew out of the ground. But unluckily for us, we couldn’t choose where we were born and who we were born to. We just grow up to find out that we are of a certain race, nationality, tribe amongst other things. In the process of growing up, people in our environment make choices for us like what school we go to for example. And sometimes we are surrounded by love and it makes us feel comfortable and we enjoy it. And in life we always seek that comfort out because it’s what we are used to. It’s what we think will make us happy.

At a certain age in our lives, there comes a time where we must take responsibility of ourselves. Some call it adulthood. Many a times, people seek the life that they grew up with, the life they were born into and sometimes they choose to make it a little better and it’s all fair and good.
Whether you agree or not, every human has a power imbedded in each and every one of us. It’s the power of free will. The power to choose. The power to make a choice and live with the consequences of that choice whether good or bad.
It’s easy to sit down and find a reason for why we are where we are today individually. It could be our race, nationality, tribe or even God. But ultimately, we choose who we become. We may not be able to control what happens to us but we can always control how we react and respond to anything and everything. We can choose to change the status quo, our philosophies, system of thinking and any other thing we so freely desire to. This is the power within us. We no longer have to live in acceptance of the way things are and let those things control us.

No matter where we find ourselves, we can always choose. No one can take that power away from us because it is within us and not without. We can choose to be happy even if our emotions don’t agree. We can choose to be free even when we are in chains. We can choose to believe and be hopefully even when there is no hope. We can choose to be rich even when we grew up poor. We can choose to ignore the power to choose. It remains all up to us and that is the beauty of this power, it’s all up to us.
