DESIGN LIKE A PRO 1.0

It has always been my passion to impart people what I know how to do even what I believe will add values to their lives. Teaching is one of my hobbies.

Design like a Pro was an idea birthed on June 19th, 2018. As a creative graphic designer preparing to graduate from the University in a couple of months, the idea dropped in my mind during a brainstorming section for the concept to adopt in a design project I was working on. I took my notepad and penned down the idea and started mapping out strategies on how to go about the execution of the plans.

On the following day, I put a call through to two other designer friends on campus and shared the idea with them, informed them about the strategies. Fortunately they both agreed to work with me for the training. Immediately we reviewed the plans together and concluded to tag the training:

Design Like a Pro: A 5 Weeks Intensive Graphic Design Masterclass.

After some days, letters were written to the appropriate offices to approve the program to be done on the campus and publicity the started.

Many students registered for the Masterclass, but the larger percentage of them left due to their low passion for design. We weren’t discouraged by this. We asked for my helping hands by calling three other creative designers to join us to facilitate for better performance. It was really a challenging but interesting and memorable one. We introduced the participants to the use of:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Aftereffects
  • CorelDraw

Using these softwares, we were able to teach them:

  1. Design environments
  2. Branding
  3. Colour theory
  4. Simplicity in design
  5. Logo design
  6. Types of design ( e.g cooperate flyer designs, banner designs, business card design, etc.)
  7. Motion graphic (e.g animations, motion adverts.)

And a lots more. Materials on branding and other areas of design were also released to the participants.

I was really impressed how fast the female among them were able to cash up and did a lots of designs. They were so passionate thereby asking questions from different aspects of design, about the challenges that faced during personal practices and how to eventually be a professional.

At the end of the Masterclass, Certificates of Participation and Completion were given to the facilitators and the participants respectively.

The facilitators gave their remark and urged the upcoming designers to give their best to ensure they rise to be among the best in the design industry.

Photographs were taken and the designers were able to network.

Lesson Learnt:

  • Team Management
  • Improve my teaching skill
  • Challenge to give solutions to emerging problems
  • Time management
  • Giving back; no sucking in.

It’s my great delight that this idea came to live and plans will definitely be put in place despite the fact that I’d have graduated from the University, we shall be looking forward to having the Design Like a Pro 2.0 next year.
