Steve Bannon and the Reincarnation of Joseph Goebbels
Many people around the world are discussing and writing about Steve Bannon’s rise to power as the American president’s chief strategist and senior counselor, the position has the same weight as the chief of staff, however they are not entirely the same, the chief of staff has administrative duties, while the chief strategist doesn’t and is more concerned with laying down a long-term strategy for Trump’s administration, that complies with the American president’s political agenda. Mr. Bannon’s educational background is somehow resembling to that of Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, both are very educated and may have similar ideologies.
Goebbels completed his Abitur (university entrance examination) in 1917. He was the top student of his class and was given the traditional honor to speak at the awards ceremony. He studied literature and history at the universities of Bonn, Würzburg, Freiburg, and Munich, aided by a scholarship from the Albertus Magnus Society. At the University of Heidelberg, Goebbels earned his PhD in German philology in 1921.
In 1933, Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, he named Joseph Goebbels, his trusted friend and colleague, to the key post of minister for public enlightenment and propaganda. In this capacity, Goebbels was charged with presenting Hitler to the public in the most favorable light.
Goebbels was instrumental in the propagandization of Hitler’s race theories, the Aryan race theory in which the Nazis insisted that the Germanic peoples were superior, in comparison to other peoples in the world, and that the Germans are predominately descended from an ancient master race, whom they called “Aryan”.
Mr. Bannon graduated from Virginia Tech in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and holds a master’s degree in national security studies from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. In 1985, Bannon received a Master of Business Administration degree with honors from Harvard Business School. Bannon was also an officer in the United States Navy for seven years in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Bannon was a founding member of the board of Breitbart News, an online far-right news, opinion and commentary website, In March 2012, after founder Andrew Breitbart’s death, Bannon became executive chair of Breitbart News LLC, the parent company of Breitbart News. Under his leadership, Breitbart took a more alternative right and nationalistic approach toward its agenda. The alt-right, or alternative right, is a loose group of people with far-right ideologies who reject mainstream politics. White supremacist Richard Spencer coined the term in 2010 to define a movement centered on white nationalism. It is worth mentioning that Alt-right beliefs have been described as white supremacist beliefs.
On November 13, 2016, Bannon was appointed chief strategist and senior counselor to President Donald Trump.
Bannon denied being a white nationalist and claimed, rather, that he is an “economic nationalist.”
Trump responded to the ongoing controversy over Bannon’s appointment in an interview with The New York Times by saying “I’ve known Steve Bannon a long time. If I thought he was a racist, or alt-right, or any of the things that we can, you know, the terms we can use, I wouldn’t even think about hiring him”
There are similarities between Bannon and Goebbels, the same powerful educational background, both are highly educated, both are nationalists & populists, Bannon maybe be xenophobic due to his connections to Breitbart news, Goebbels was a racist and a xenophobe, and we cannot deny that white supremacy was a hard-core Nazi Ideology. Both have/had considerable amount of influence and thereby power.
It eludes me why the American president would choose a person such as Steve Bannon? They may agree on nationalism and populism, but do they agree on xenophobia and on race? It is my belief as well that Bannon’s ideologies go further more than just populism (in a more extreme manner) and that Trump may not be able to follow up. Under that nationalist and populist mask is a dangerous xenophobic person with ambitions of war and the reshaping of world society. In the end, extreme ideologies in race and hatred are not meant to last, I hope.
