Three Tips for Scoring the Best Flight Deals
While many of us want to travel, it can get a bit pricey, especially when it comes to the airfare. Fortunately, frequent traveler Omar Yunes is sharing his top tips for scoring the best flight deals.
1. Sign up for alerts. Omar Yunes recommends signing up for flight alerts so you will be notified about the cheapest airfares. But, rather than signing up for alerts from each individual airline, subscribe to AirfareWatchDog’s alerts and email newsletters. AirfareWatchDog will keep you informed on the cheapest flights from your home airport and let you know when flight prices drop.
2. Know when to fly. When you shop for flight tickets, you probably compare prices from different airlines. That’s good, but you should also compare flights for different days and times. Typically, the cheapest days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, while the most expensive are Fridays and Sundays because they are the most popular. As for the time, flights around dinner, at dawn, or overnight tend to be the least expensive.
3. Know when to buy. Omar Yunes says the best time to book a U.S. flight is on a Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST. At this time, airlines release a lot of their sales, and their competitors lower their prices to compete with those sales. Therefore, you have more low fares to choose from. And, according to flight data from FareCompare, the best time to buy a domestic ticket is between three months and 30 days before departure. The best time for international flights is between 5 ½ months and 1 ½ months in advance. But, during peak travel seasons, like June, July, August and December, it’s advised to buy international tickets 2 months ahead.
