I am a mentor at the several accelerators in San Francisco and I keep seeing the same design problems over and over again. Below my notes after the last meeting with one of the founders.

Make sure your product don’t have these issues.

  • Confusing short product description. A short product description doesn’t explain clearly what the product does and its benefits for the customers. It is crucial to find the right words that show a product’s core values AND validate them with the potential users who have never heard about it. Without the validation part, you risk decreasing the effectiveness of all user-acquisition activities.
  • Very broad vision of the potential users, almost like “everyone” is a problem. By focusing on the specific groups of users and understanding who they are, you can better communicate product values and be more successful in getting closer to their hearts and minds.
  • No “bridge” from web to mobile. The product is focused on the messaging component via a mobile phone. However, many people may discover it through the web and when a site is missing a “bridge” that moves a user from web to mobile you are losing customers.
  • Lack of the emotional component and a focus only on logic. People should be able to understand the product in 2–3 sec just by scanning the web site/flyer/etc. You have to find ways to avoid a cognitive load at the very first interaction as much as we can. Content should be visual and provoke users’ emotions and feelings.
