The World May Be Ending, But You Are Not.

Coronavirus is not just physically killing us, it is also mentally paralysing us.

It had already been over an hour and the line hadn’t moved an inch (that’s centimetre in non-American). With great difficulty, I was able to steal a quick glance at the madness inside the store.

My beloved grocery store had turned into Dawn Of The Dead.

A quick mental calculation had to be done.

Let’s say there were X people ahead of me. If each person took 2 seconds to move 1 step — how many steps would it take for me to get my organic avocado spread?

The choice was simple: this is where I am to spend the next 2.5 years of my life. At this grocery store.

What Is Really Going On?

Coronavirus was declared a pandemic by WHO this week, changing our life indefinitely, it seems. Thanks, no thanks CNN.

This declaration came as a major free-pass-alert for people around the world, to get into hoarder mode and grab everything money can buy — all at once! Amid this noise, there lies an underlying story of mental heath that we’re choosing to ignore. But before we get to that, let’s get a few facts straight:

  • A Pandemic is an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, affecting a large number of people. (Yes, like the Kardashians!)
  • The virus has affected over 120,000+ people worldwide and the mortality rate is around 3.4%.
  • Contagion may feel very real right now but please don’t give up on your bacon, just yet!
  • Lastly, there is NOT A THING you can do about any of this, please quit hoarding toilet rolls!

What Can I Do Right Now?

Every news channel around the world is blaring the same headlines over & over, creating wild degrees of chaos everywhere! Kudos to the one inspiring the toilet roll frenzy!

Self-Quarantine, is the solution for today.

Confine yourself to the four walls then make sure not to touch those walls!

The less you come in contact with any outside objects/people, the lesser you are prone to contract the virus or accidentally give it to someone. (Yeah, you might be secretly petting it for two weeks).

Offices around the world are shutting down, most schools have already cancelled classes, stores have shut their doors and your favourite band will not be playing anytime soon.

You are at home — maybe alone, maybe with a few people. You are constantly ingesting fear thrown at you from news channels, social media and alerts. You cannot walk it off, or catch a break! Every minute something new happens or someone new dies. It’s frustrating and mentally exhausting!

The world has finally come together after years, to collectively figure out a medical solution to the virus.

While that is the most realistic thing to do, we are forgetting to address the mass hysteria this is creating amongst millions of people around the world, caged in their homes for weeks, searching for answers, riddled with the fear of the unknown.

It seems like this is going to get a lot worse, which means we’re going to be home for a lot longer!

Help Yourself, Inside & Out.

While I cannot set up a mental health helpline for millions of people out there fighting several issues during this period, I am hoping to reach you through my article.

If you find yourself caged, feeling hopeless and longing for some fresh air — here are a few ideas you can explore:

  • Take this time to enjoy the little things you often miss. Like, the smell of freshly brewed coffee first thing in the morning: watch the aroma fill your house while you sit and enjoy your brew, maybe with a loved one.
  • This can be a very frustrating time, especially if you’re battling anxiety or depression. Take time to journal your feelings everyday. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your confidant and share your thoughts.
  • Remember that project from college you spent every weekend building? Why not pick it up? Spend some time brainstorming it — see where it goes.
  • This is the perfect time to start a great habit. Always wanted to try Yoga? 20 minutes a day for 30 days will do the trick.
  • Maybe there lies a chef inside you? Master that Chef by promoting yourself from cage-free eggs to cage-free chicken.
  • This is probably the best time to catch up with old friends. Its ‘bout time you find out why Becky suddenly got “sick” in the summer of ’99.
  • Did you know Goodreads is more than just bookmarking stuff? Pick up some of those books and give them a read — last I checked, Amazon is still up and running!
  • We know Nana loves you. Send her a handwritten card, and make sure to Lysol wipe it — skip that hug for now.

Mental safety is just as important as physical safety. I cannot wait to go back to the time when our biggest worry was interference from Russian bots.
