Is it UN-American to Take Care of Poor Americans’ Healthcare?

Healthcare is expensive. This is one of the few statements on which most, if not all, American citizens can find agreement. Moving from that statement to almost any other statement about what should be done to remedy this problem means moving into an arena of great conflicts as demonstrated by the US Congress very recently.

Do you believe that healthcare is a right that should be guaranteed to all citizens? Or do you believe that healthcare is just another consumer good in our “free enterprise economy”? Some people believe that the poor cannot afford medical care is simply a factual part of our free market economy. It would be “socialistic” for government to help American citizens who are too poor to afford medical care.

Note that our elected representatives who constitute our Congress are hotly conflicted on the answers to the questions indicated above. What are your answers to the above questions? And why?
