Paper plane: Trip back to memory lane
In our establishing shot, viewers can first identify with the block plate “18 Dakota Crescent”; its design is a symbolic sign which many Singaporeans can recognise culturally as an old HDB flat.
The two subjects in our photo series creates metonymy. Their strong sisterhood is reflected by proximity and common fate, as they stand close together and throw their paper aeroplanes from similar positions. This ascertains their strong bond, hinting the close-knit community ties of the past.
This photo series demonstrates the shared experience model, where we attempt to connect with viewers through common childhood activities. In this picture, viewers of different generations can relate by memory to a common activity in school: folding and playing paper aeroplanes. The various traditional childhood activities highlight the salience factor in the Cognitive theory. The thematically-linked photo series also serves to remind viewers that this significant place will be demolished very soon.
To help the viewer instinctively recall their experiences and evoke past memories, the photos are aesthetically enhanced with reference to the Valencia Instagram filter. We hope to preserve a piece of our old heartland culture before it is lost.
