Bubbles: A pop of local culture

The sisters are blowing bubbles using a thin tube and plastic-like glue paste, which can be bought at less than 50 cents at a provision shop. The children of Generation Y used to spend a portion of their pocket money on these items, which were a form of entertainment and joy during their days without social media.

To increase credibility of the image, we have specifically chosen the sisters’ attires with reference to the 90s. This also serves as a persuasive appeal of ethos.

Besides the school uniforms, the elder sister wears a large circular-framed spectacles that used to be a trend in the 90s, while the younger sister has plastic-framed spectacles and pigtails which are similar to how we dressed in primary school.

This photo portrays the two sisters’ happiness. It gives us a positive feeling as we are able to relate the appreciation of simple lifestyles and games with the two girls, especially with the younger sister’s face of joy upon seeing the blown bubble. Through such indexical signs, we are able to compose a condensed code to tell viewers that joy and happiness need not be defined by money or value of any items.
