6 Reasons Why the Students Tend to Procrastinate?

The most common drawback during a student’s life is the amount of procrastination a scholar instills in one’s life which leads to academic failure. A famous quote goes as, “Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.” When today’s duties are put off for some other day, failures are bound to come along the way.

It is one of the common sights to encounter a student spending his/her time in complete leisure sans any burden of the assigned academic work. Be it the preparation for a term examinations or the submission of academic documents including assignment or dissertation writing; the scholars tend to waive off the initial stress of completing them. However, time is nobody’s slave. Therefore, as the “do or die” situation approaches, the students go in a state of havoc.

The habit to leave the things for some other day is inherent in some students due to the following reasons:

● Anticipation of Hard Work: As per a theory, the humans tend to come up with different ways to save their effort and time by anticipating that there is a lot of hard work to be invested, and hence, they tend to extend the timeline to complete the work. The same applies to the students who are in fear of the amount of labor and therefore, they procrastinate their academic effort. Instead, they should cast off this fright to strive towards work completion within the allotted time.

● Lack of Proper Sleep: With the recent advancement of technology, the students are leading a tech-savvy life which consumes most of their productive time. They tend to lay awake till late hours in the night and hence become sleep-deprived. According to scientific research, it has been found that poor sleeping habits have a negative impact on the motivation and vitality of a scholar. This results in their lack of interest in doing their academic work.

Instead of spending sleepless nights into unproductive work, the scholars can utilize small chunks of time to complete their academic task.

● Unsure of How to Commence: It can be quite an overwhelming task to assess the exact beginning of the assigned academic work. When the students face such moments of indecisiveness, they put off the whole work for some other time. At such times of distress, the scholars can think of taking supervised help from their teachers to aid them with the introduction of their academic writing.

● Major Distractions: It comes as no surprise to realize that the students are most prone to interruptions during their academic task. These can be in the form of a favourite TV series or a fun game; these are enough to change the mood of a scholar from doing some serious work. Therefore, to submit the allotted work before the deadline, the students must also engage themselves in the academic effort to accomplish the desired goals.

● Reluctance to Do Work: No complaint is better than “I do not want to work.” This is one of the main reasons which motivate the students in a negative manner to not strive towards their assignment or dissertation work completion. To de-stress themselves in the beginning phase, they tend to leave behind the task to a later period of time. This must be avoided and the students should start as early as they can, to be stress-free in the end.

● Take Time for Granted: The university professors often grant the students ample time to complete and submit their documents. However, this surplus time is taken for granted by the scholars and hence, they do not tend to commit themselves unless the deadline approaches. This can be avoided by doing chunks of academic writing each day to accomplish the desired grades.

● Improper Planning: The students have a tendency to overestimate their performance within the deadline. However, they fail in estimating the long-term results of this overconfidence and hence, succumb to the improper planning method employed by them. Hence, the students must make it a point to plan out their academic work in advance to avoid any hassle.

When the students become aware of the probable reasons of their poor grades in the academic work; one of the topmost causes of it comes out to be their procrastinated attitude towards life. By acknowledging the same, they can strive towards the elimination of the same to achieve the desired academic goals.
