In Igbo culture, various titles are used to denote positions of authority and leadership. Among these titles, “igwe” and “eze” are commonly associated with kingship, while “obi” holds a different connotation. This article aims to explore the nuances and differences between igwe, eze, and obi, shedding light on their meanings and usage within the Igbo community.

Igwe and eze are two terms used to refer to kingship in Igbo culture. However, their usage varies across different regions of Igbo land. “Eze” is the most commonly used term to denote kingship, while “igwe” is specific to certain areas.

The title of “eze” can be applied to individuals in various domains of expertise or authority. For instance, one can be an “eze ahịa,” which means the king of the market. However, the term “igwe ahịa” is not used, despite both “igwe” and “eze” being translated as “king.” The term “igwe” is solely reserved for leadership roles, while “eze” encompasses both leadership and achievements in any field. If someone achieves success in a particular endeavor, they can be referred to as an “eze” of that domain.

Within the category of “eze,” there are various subtypes, such as “eze ji” (king of yam), “eze mmụta” (king of knowledge), “eze agụmaakwụkwọ” (king of studies), and “eze amamihe” (king of wisdom). The title “eze” can be applied to individuals who excel and achieve success in different areas of expertise.

On the other hand, the term “obi” holds a distinct meaning. While it can refer to a ruler, it can also signify the most senior or eldest individual within a community. The term “obi” translates to “first among equals,” indicating a position of prominence and respect. However, it is important to note that not everyone should be addressed as “obi” simply because the term is translated as “first among equals.” It carries a specific significance within the Igbo culture.
