Who Takes Drugs For IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a more official term for “stomach problems”. Namely, abdominal bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, cramping, and/or acid reflux.

IBS affects around 11% of the world’s population (Ozdener & Rivkin, 2017). That’s over 1 in 10 people!

But, who takes drugs for their IBS?

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) published some official guidelines in 2014. These guidelines are on pharmacological therapies for IBS (Weinberg et al., 2014). In other words, the AGA tells doctors and gastroenterologists when to prescribe drugs for their IBS patients.

The AGA guidelines specify that drugs should only be used as a last resort in IBS management (Ozdener & Rivkin, 2017).
