Tidy Inbox is simply a mechanism to filter out Newsletters (or social mails) from inbox.
Gmail has good spam filter and is smart. When you mark as spam and unsubscribe in it doesn't bring back that email to inbox in the future. So if you have been doing that the Newsletters folder in Newton will just be a place where you receive your good newsletters which you can check once in a while. It’s not spam. I agree. Just switch on sync for Newsletters and you will see the unread count too. Currently the unread count doesn't reflect at the group level (Low Priority) but a fix is coming.
Non gmail accounts don’t have good spam filters. E.g Yahoo Mail or generic IMAP. They get loads of junk (mostly newsletters) in their inbox everyday. The first thing they do in the morning is to select and delete junk to get to their real mails. They do mark mails as spam or unsubscribe but they continue to get thee mails in inbox. Services like Sanebox is made to solve this. So Tidy Inbox filters out Newsletters to a new folder so that they can focus on real mails. It’s still not a spam filter but it’s close. Just a Newsletter filter to tidy up your inbox from where you can periodically check and bulk delete. We just look at some typical aspects of newsletters and filter them out. If there is a good newsletter they can move to inbox for the system to learn.
It’s upto you how you to want to make use of it. Like I mentioned earlier we have plans to create unified All Newsletters folder sometime in the future.
