In 2019, the CENTER OF INTENATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW (“CIEL”) estimated that production and incineration of plastic would add 850 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere equivalent to 189 coal-fired power plants. By 2050 this emission could raise to 2.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year — or 615 coal plant’s worth. In our ocean, plastic directly chokes and smothers a host of marine animals and habitats and can take hundreds of years to break down.
