Smokey Robinson Brings the GASMS with Upcoming Album Release
Smokey Robinson is Back with New Music and a Playful name: “GASMS”
The Motown legend, Smokey Robinson, is set to return with a bang on April 28 with his first solo studio album in nearly 10 years, “GASMS.” This album marks a new chapter in Smokey’s illustrious music career, and the playful pun in its title has already generated humor and excitement among fans.
The album features nine new songs written and produced by Robinson, including the first single “If We Don’t Have Each Other.” In a statement, Smokey shared his thoughts on the single, saying, “I chose this song as the first single of my new album because it’s different musically and has a slide dance feeling to it… which is different from what I’ve ever done before. It also has a current rhythm of today that I love, and I hope everyone else does too.”
“GASMS” marks Smokey’s first new record since 2014, when he collaborated with stars like Elton John and Mary J. Blige on “Smokey & Friends,” a reimagining of some of his classic hits. And, as the album title suggests, Smokey is keeping the fire burning with his music.
In addition to his new album, Smokey will soon be honored alongside his longtime friend and Motown founder Berry Gordy as the 2023 MusiCares Persons of the Year. This marks the first time the award will be given to two individuals. Smokey expressed his gratitude for the honor and his support for MusiCares, saying, “I have supported MusiCares for many years and know what great work they do for our creative community who need our help.”
The Playful Pun in “GASMS”
“GASMS” is an intensely “explosive” or pleasurable experience or thing… or a short term for orgasm, which has sparked humor and curiosity among fans. In a lighthearted way, Smokey Robinson acknowledged the pun and shared his thoughts on expressing sexuality through art, especially at an advanced age and I think that’s absolutely amazing.
It’s not uncommon for musicians, especially in R&B and soul genres, to explore themes of love, desire, and sexuality in their lyrics and album titles. And, as a trailblazer in the Motown era and one of the greatest songwriters and singers of all time, Smokey Robinson has always pushed the boundaries with his art and continues to do so with “GASMS.”
