For a long time now, manufacturing has been about large facilities, shop floor, assemblies and production lines. It was all about bringing together equipment, parts and people to manufacture something. That was in the past. Today, the manufacturing world is changing. The Internet, global markets, competition, and new technologies are transforming manufacturing. Now, it’s about how to connect contractors, suppliers, finding the right talent, and optimization for manufacturing and different markets. Innovation becomes the key things to survive in a modern manufacturing world.

Digital transformation is one the things that help to manufacturing companies to innovate in this new competitive world. I was reading BCG article — How digital transforms innovation strategy. Read it, here. The part of the article that resonated the most with me related to how even large companies cannot do everything by themselves and the ways for them to work together with suppliers, contractors and partners.

Here is the passage.

The passage resonated very much with what we build at OpenBOM. In many ways OpenBOM is your digital transformation supported in the world of manufacturing and engineering. Check one of my earlier articles on Digitalization, here. The following video shows how OpenBOM helps you to capture engineering information from CAD system and make it digitally available and transparent to team members, contractors, or partners whilst collaborating in real-time.

Conclusion. Modern manufacturing environment demands new set of services and capabilities from manufacturing companies in their ability to connect and communicate with global network of contractors, suppliers and partners. It requires a whole set of new tools to capture information and build relations. Data is a key element of this new manufacturing world. Those manufacturing companies that will be able to make it happen will come in the future. We are looking how to build the future digital transformation infrastructure to make it happen.

Best, Oleg

PS. Let’s get to know each other better. If you live in the Greater Boston area, I invite you for a coffee together (coffee is on me). If not nearby, let’s have a virtual coffee session — I will figure out how to send you a real coffee.
