Here’s the end-to-end story how to order parts for your Onshape project using new openBoM “Order BOM”

Life is an end-to-end story. I just learned about the new Uber CEO this morning, previously the CEO of Expedia. I read an interesting quote in one of the articles: “Consumers may put off buying a new car or a home repair, but they’re not going to skip their summer vacations.” The same applies to engineering and manufacturing companies. You might not buy fancy software, but you still need to order parts to assemble the product and ship them to your customers.

openBoM has come to help you by introducing production planning and “Order BOM”. You may have caught the news in my latest production update earlier this morning. If not, click, here. The new production planning and Order BOM functionality is available to everyone, but keep in mind it is still considered as a “Beta.” We’re actively working with a small number of Beta customers to gather feedback and input. BTW, if you’re interested to join and give us feedback, please reach out to me at oleg @ openbom dot com. There are few spots left. Otherwise please try out it and if you have spare moment, send me your feedback.

One of the things that excites me the most about Order BOM is the story of how you can fully go from design to parts order using openBoM. Today, I want to demonstrate this end-to-end story in a short video using openBoM and Onshape. Before I do, here’s the scenario:

  • I’m going to use Onshape for design.
  • I will create a Part list using the Onshape openBoM integrated app.
  • I will use a few Part catalogs previously created with the parts I need along with fasteners and a few more parts from McMaster.
  • Then, once the parts catalogs are assigned to the BOM I just created, I release my BOM for production.
  • And I create a Production batch with 5 units, and see my order BOM created. Yay!!
  • Now I plan purchasing these parts or send this “shopping list” to the person doing purchasing for me… because…
  • As I checked the status of all parts to be delivered, I then release order BOM to production and… inventory on hands is be updated automatically.

Conclusion. The end to end story to order parts for your project is what openBoM is all about. Getting it 100% done in the cloud with Onshape and openBoM. Sounds exciting, right? Getting to the Order BOM was fast — what do you think? I know there are gaps here and there. But I’m pretty sure it is much easier than running the same end-to-end exercise on Excel spreadsheets.

PS. We should know each other better. If you live in a Greater Boston, please let’s have a meeting (coffee is on me). If you’re located in other places, let’s have a virtual coffee session — I will figure out how to send you a real coffee for our virtual coffee session.
