Three reasons why we’re enhancing openBoM reports

In the era of cloud tools one can ask, ‘why do you need reports?’ Your data is always available online, on any device, browser, and can be shared with your team, contractors and suppliers.

Apparently, however, process does matter and getting new shiny tools such as openBoM cannot remove the complexity of people relationships and established communications in manufacturing companies.

Company communication culture is established over many years yet I must admit I don’t expect to see fax machines in procurement departments. However, I do see a fax sent over email now and again. But it’s that established culture that drove us to listen carefully to our users and work on enhancing BOM reporting capabilities supported in openBoM. So as a result, from openBoM you can export a BOM to Excel, PDF or CSV files. Learn more, here. In the last product update, we took export to the next level with (1) selection of Properties to export; and (2) export with applied BOM filters and/or sorting. So in other words, you can slice and dice a BOM and export it in any form you want. Watch these two videos to get an idea of how openBoM export works:

In addition to the aforementioned export features, and this is my favorite, you can export a multi-level BOM. Watch this video to get an idea how it works:

So here’s where openBoM’s export features may come in useful:

1. Sending BOMs to suppliers and customers in case they don’t have internet connections or want to have an access to the data offline;

2. Integrating with ERP and other enterprise software. These software systems are often old, but do usually have the ability to import data from CSV or Excel; and

3. Offloading data from openBoM in case you want to have a private copy of the data.

Conclusion. Reports are powerful. What do you think of our export feature? Could you find them useful? Did you see any problems we’ve overlooked? I’m interested to learn more about the your BOM export needs and requirements. Reach out to me and we’ll do our best to add export features you’ll value.

Best, Oleg

PS. We should know each other better. If you live in a Greater Boston, please let’s have a meeting (coffee is on me). If you’re located in other places, let’s have a virtual coffee session — I will figure out how to send you a real coffee for our virtual coffee session.
