Who is an Operative?

According to the 4th Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the word “Operative” has nine definitions: Five for approaching the word “Operative” as an adjective; and Four for approaching the word “Operative” as a Noun.

As an adjective in our American Heritage Dictionary, “Operative” is described as “being in effect, having force, operating; functioning effectively; engaged in or concerned with physical or mechanical activity.”

As a noun, one way American Heritage Dictionary defines “Operative” is “one who works for a political organization, often wielding influence out of public view.”
