Houseboat


A houseboat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a house, like a barge. Some houseboats are not motorized , because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point and often tethered to the ground to provide public services. However, many are able to work with their own power.

The houseboats in Kerala are huge slow barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked model Kettuvallams which in ancient times, were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to Kochi’s port. Houseboats of Kerala have long been regarded as a very convenient means of transport.

The popularity of houseboats returned to function main tourist attraction.
This houseboat is about 18 to 21m long and about 4 to 6m wide in the middle. The shell is made of wooden planks Anjili which are held together by strings of coconut fibers. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with layers of oil cashew protection.
