Nice piece.

I’d like to add to this: “ You’re a talented writer with a lot to offer, so know your worth. If a company tries to pay you pennies, they clearly don’t value your talent.

My experience is that (a) competing on price puts you in a race to the bottom that a first-world writer cannot win; (b) clients who are looking for acceptable product at rock-bottom prices are not my clients — they’re hard to please and seem to feel that they own you even if they’re paying next to nothing; and (c) clients who’re willing to pay professional rates understand that they have to treat you as a professional.
