The Facebookerization of the internet in Africa

I have written a guest post on iAfrikan about a new kind of locked-down internet which is a far-cry from what I had experienced a decade ago. In this article, I criticize Facebook and telecoms that collaborated with it for creating this new locked down internet that serves mostly the purpose of big blue's rapid expansion schemes and the telecoms’ lust for revenue at the expense of sacrificing the true internet.

My criticism is based on that fact that there’s now less value co-creation as platforms and distribution networks are mostly controlled by a few well established internet behemoth.

It’s unfortunately that if this trend goes uncurtailed, then the internet as we know it is becoming more and more centralized despite its origin intent. And the value chain will mostly be controlled by those on top of the food chain.
